Insider tips
Frankfurt’s market winds through the center with more than 230 stalls, from the Roßmarkt and the Hauptwache past the Paulsplatz to the Römerberg and down to the Main riverbank, where there’s a children’s Christmas market. The big tree on the Römerberg, framed by the old town houses, is the classic photo. Try to be on the Römerberg at 18:00 on a Wednesday or Saturday, when brass players perform from the gallery of St. Nicholas Church. While you’re there, try Bethmännchen (marzipan cookies with three almonds) and a mug of hot apple wine, both Frankfurt traditions. If you’re bringing little ones, pick up a free Kinder-Finder wristband at any children’s ride and write your phone number on it.
Getting there
Take the U4 or U5 to Dom/Römer, or tram 11, 12 or 14 to Römer/Paulskirche. With the S-Bahn or most other U-Bahn lines, get off at Hauptwache, about a 5-minute walk from the Römerberg. There’s no event parking, so public transport is the way to go.
Nearby markets
If you have an extra day, the Heidelberg Christmas Market and the Würzburg Christmas Market both make good day trips from Frankfurt by train.
