Christmas Markets Near Munich: 5 Easy Day Trips by Train (2026)

Updated October 2026. Dates and hours below are for the 2026 season.

Short answer: The easiest Christmas markets to reach from Munich by regional train are Rosenheim (27 Nov to 24 Dec 2026), the island market on Fraueninsel in the Chiemsee (two long weekends only: 26 to 29 Nov and 3 to 6 Dec), Kufstein in Austria (town park market from 20 Nov, fortress market on Advent weekends), Salzburg (19 Nov 2026 to 1 Jan 2027) and tiny Oberaudorf (12 and 19 Dec). All five work with a Bayern-Ticket, and a family of four with kids under 15 can travel all day for €44.

We live in Kiefersfelden, which is the last village in Bavaria before you roll into Kufstein, Austria. Every November people ask me which Christmas markets they should visit “near Munich.” Munich has its own beautiful Christmas markets. Yes, they get a little more crowded, but they’re of course worth seeing. But if you’re looking for some quieter spots with just as much Christmas spirit, this list is for you.

So this is my list of the ones I’d actually send a friend to. They’re all on the train line that runs southeast from Munich toward the Alps, and you don’t need a car for any of them.

First, the ticket that saves you money

The Bayern-Ticket is a day pass for all regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) and most buses in Bavaria. In 2026 it costs €34 for one adult and €10 for each extra adult, up to five people. Two adults cost €44. Here’s the part people miss: up to three kids aged 6 to 14 ride free with it, and kids 5 and under are always free.

It also works into Austria as far as Kufstein and Salzburg Hbf, which matters for two of the markets below.

A few rules: – On weekdays it’s valid from 9 a.m. On weekends, and on 24 and 31 December, it’s valid from midnight. Either way it runs until 3 a.m. the next morning. – It’s not valid on ICE, IC or EC trains (the long-distance ones). Stick to the red regional trains and the BRB Meridian.

If you already have a Deutschland-Ticket (€63 a month in 2026), that also works on these regional trains. It covers the BRB trains from Kiefersfelden into Kufstein and the regional trains from Freilassing into Salzburg Hbf. It does not cover trips inside Austria.

The easiest way to buy either one is the DB Navigator app, and the ticket machines at the station sell them too.

1. Rosenheim: a classic Bavarian market close to Munich

Dates: 27 November to 24 December 2026 Where: Max-Josefs-Platz and Ludwigsplatz, in the pedestrian old town Hours: Market stalls daily 10:30 to 20:00. Food and drink stands stay open until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Christmas Eve 10:00 to 13:00. Getting there: Regional train from Munich Hbf. The BRB Meridian (RE 5) takes roughly 45 to 55 minutes. From the station it’s a short walk into the old town.

Rosenheim is my go-to answer when someone wants a classic Bavarian Christmas market at a relaxed pace. The square is surrounded by pastel, arcaded old town buildings, and the wooden huts and lights fill it in the coziest way.

It opens on Friday 27 November with a children’s fairy-tale parade at 16:00, walking from the Salingarten to the stage, followed by the official opening at about 16:30. There’s a stage program most days at 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00 (brass bands, choirs, kids’ groups). Horse-drawn carriage rides usually leave from Heilig-Geist-Straße in the afternoon.

Two practical tips. On the four Advent Saturdays there’s a free Adventsbus into town, which is handy if you’re staying nearby. And if you have little kids, go on a weekday afternoon. You’ll see the lights come on around 16:30 and have plenty of room to wander.

While you’re there, look out for roasted almonds, Lebkuchen and a warm mug of Kinderpunsch for the kids.

2. Fraueninsel: the island market (only two weekends a year)

Dates: 26 to 29 November and 3 to 6 December 2026 Hours: Thursday 15:00 to 20:00, Friday to Sunday 12:00 to 20:00 Getting there: Train to Prien am Chiemsee (on the Munich to Salzburg line), then the little Chiemsee-Bahn or bus 481 down to the harbor at Prien/Stock, then the boat.

Fraueninsel is a car-free island in the Chiemsee with a Benedictine convent, a handful of fishermen’s houses and, for two long weekends, about 90 craft stalls with lights strung between them. You get there by boat. In the dark, with the lake around you. It’s pretty special.

Just plan around the timing. It only runs on the first two Advent weekends, and Saturdays are the most popular days. The boats run every half hour, and you can’t reserve them: – From Prien/Stock to the island: every 30 minutes from 10:00 to 18:30 – Back to Prien/Stock: every 30 minutes from 12:00 until the last boat at 21:00 – From Gstadt: the shorter crossing, every 30 minutes from 9:50 to 18:50, plus an extra shuttle to the island’s north pier between 12:00 and 19:00

If you take the historic Chiemsee-Bahn from Prien station down to the harbor, ask for the combined ticket. The boat line lists it at €16.80 for adults and €8.40 for kids aged 6 to 15 for train plus boat. On market weekends a steam locomotive pulls most runs, which kids love.

My tip: if you can, go on the Thursday or Friday. Get on a boat by mid-afternoon, so you see the island in daylight and then again with the lights on. Dress warmer than you think you need to. Out on the lake in December, a hat and gloves make the evening so much more enjoyable.

Try a Renkensemmel, a roll with smoked whitefish from the lake.

3. Kufstein: two markets, one fortress, technically another country

Kufstein town park market (Weihnachtsmarkt im Stadtpark): 20 November to 20 December 2026. Wednesday to Friday 16:00 to 20:00, Saturday and Sunday 13:00 to 20:00. Also open on the 8 December holiday. Closed most Mondays and Tuesdays. Christmas Magic at Kufstein Fortress (Weihnachtszauber auf der Festung): Saturdays and Sundays only, 28/29 Nov, 5/6 Dec, 12/13 Dec and 19/20 Dec, 11:00 to 19:00 (last entry 18:00). Not open on 8 December. Getting there: Train from Munich via Rosenheim to Kufstein. The Bayern-Ticket and the Deutschland-Ticket both cover the regional trains to Kufstein.

Kufstein is basically our neighbor, and we love it. It’s a small Tyrolean town on the Inn River with a huge medieval fortress sitting on a rock right above the old town.

The town park market is the cozy one. Glühwein and punch come in proper ceramic mugs. There’s a little carousel and a nostalgic toy train for kids, and you’ll find Tyrolean snacks like Kiachl (fried dough, sweet or with sauerkraut) and Zillertaler Krapfen.

The fortress market is the atmospheric one. It’s set in the old casemates and courtyards, with live craft demonstrations, a Christmas workshop where kids can make things, and an “Angel Post Office” where they can drop off their letters. Entry for the Christmas Magic in 2026:

Ticket Price
Adults €7.00
Kids, students (12 to 24, with ID) €5.00
Family (2 adults + up to 4 kids under 16) €16.50
Kids 0 to 5 Free

One thing the fortress itself recommends, and I’d agree: walk up the Kaiserjägerweg. It’s about 10 minutes from the town square. The panorama railway does run, but it doesn’t drop you right at the market, the path from it is longer, and the fortress lift is not running during the Christmas Magic. The old grounds are only partly wheelchair-friendly, so call ahead if that matters.

4. Salzburg: the big one, and worth it

Dates: 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 Where: Domplatz and Residenzplatz, in the old town Hours: Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:30, Friday 10:00 to 21:00, Saturday 9:00 to 21:00, Sunday and holidays 9:00 to 20:30. Christmas Eve 9:00 to 15:00. Getting there: The BRB Meridian (RE 5) runs hourly from Munich via Rosenheim to Salzburg Hbf in just under two hours. The Bayern-Ticket is valid all the way to Salzburg Hbf.

If you only have time for one “big city” market on this list, make it Salzburg. The setting is breathtaking: the cathedral on one side, the fortress lit up on the hill above you. It also runs all the way to New Year’s Day.

Beyond the stalls: – Choirs most afternoons. – Traditional tower brass music on the Residenzplatz on several evenings. – A visit from the Salzburg Christ Child with four angels on the Advent Sundays (29 Nov, 6, 13 and 20 Dec at 16:00). – A big Krampus run on Saturday 5 December, expected around 19:00. It’s a spectacular evening show; with little ones, see our Krampus guide for tips.

From Salzburg Hbf to the old town is a decent walk or a short bus ride. Leave yourself some time for the walk back, since the Meridian runs once an hour.

5. Oberaudorf: a small village market for two Saturdays only

Dates: Saturday 12 December and Saturday 19 December 2026 Where: Kurpark, Oberaudorf Getting there: BRB train (RB 54) from Rosenheim toward Kufstein, get off at Oberaudorf, then about a 10-minute walk.

This one is a local thing. Oberaudorf is the village just up the valley from us, and its Christmas market in the spa park only runs on two Saturdays. It’s small, but if you’re already doing Rosenheim or Kufstein that weekend, it’s a sweet little add-on, and it feels like the real village version of all this.

How I’d plan it

  • One train line, two markets: Rosenheim in the late morning, then Kufstein for the afternoon and evening.
  • The romantic one: Fraueninsel on a Thursday or Friday. It deserves the whole afternoon and evening.
  • The big-city day: Salzburg, staying until the lights come on.

And of course, if you’re staying in Munich, the beautiful Munich Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is a must. It runs 20 November to 24 December 2026 this year, starting earlier than it used to, so there’s even more time to enjoy it.

Planning more of Advent? See every 2026 date in our German Christmas markets guide and the full Christmas market calendar, and if you’re here in early December, don’t miss the Krampus runs in Bavaria and Tyrol.

FAQ

What is the best Christmas market near Munich for a day trip?

For an easy, classic Bavarian market, go to Rosenheim. It’s under an hour by regional train and open daily from 27 November to 24 December 2026. For something more unusual, the island market on Fraueninsel in the Chiemsee is the standout, but it only runs on the first two Advent weekends.

Can I use the Bayern-Ticket to get to Salzburg and Kufstein?

Yes. The Bayern-Ticket is valid on regional trains as far as Salzburg Hbf and Kufstein in Austria. It costs €34 for one person plus €10 per extra adult in 2026, and up to three children aged 6 to 14 travel free. It isn’t valid on ICE, IC or EC trains.

When is the Fraueninsel Christmas market in 2026?

26 to 29 November and 3 to 6 December 2026. It’s open Thursday 15:00 to 20:00 and Friday to Sunday 12:00 to 20:00. You reach the island by boat from Prien/Stock or Gstadt. The boats can’t be reserved, and the last one back leaves at 21:00.

Do you need to pay to enter Christmas markets in Bavaria and Austria?

Most are free, including Rosenheim, Salzburg and Munich. The Christmas Magic at Kufstein Fortress is the exception: in 2026 it’s €7 for adults, €5 for students aged 12 to 24, and €16.50 for a family.
