22 Christmas Markets Still Open After Christmas 2026

Updated October 2026. Every date below is for the 2026/27 season and was re-checked on each market’s or city’s official website on 30 October 2026.

Short answer: Yes, you can still find Christmas markets after 24 December. In 2026, at least 22 markets in Germany and Austria stay open after Christmas: five run to 30 December, four to New Year’s Eve, and nine into January 2027, the longest to 6 January (Vienna, Innsbruck, Seefeld) and 5 January (Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

Servus (hi) from a small German village near the Austrian border, south of Rosenheim! 👋 Brian here. It’s one of the most common questions about Christmas in Germany: “If we arrive on the 26th, did we miss the Christmas markets?” Most German markets do close on 23 or 24 December. Not all of them, though, and some of the prettiest ones near us in the Alps keep going well into the new year.

The days between Christmas and New Year have their own name here: zwischen den Jahren (between the years). It’s a slower, cozy week, and a Glühwein under the mountains is a great way to spend an afternoon of it. Here’s every market I could confirm for 2026/27, grouped by how long it stays open.

Which markets are open into January 2027?

These nine are the ones to plan around if you’re traveling over New Year. Several of them are in the Alps, where Advent and the Christmas season really do last until Epiphany on 6 January (a public holiday in Bavaria and Austria).

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: the longest-running market in Bavaria on this list

Winter im Park fills the Michael-Ende-Kurpark below the Zugspitze mountains, and it’s open every day at Christmas, including the 25th and 26th. On New Year’s Eve it closes at 18:00. In my opinion it’s the best “after Christmas” pick for families in Bavaria, because it’s an easy regional-train trip from Munich and the whole town feels like winter.

Berchtesgaden: Advent under the Watzmann

The Berchtesgadener Advent takes a break on Christmas Day, then reopens on 26 December and runs to 3 January with slightly shorter hours (until 19:00). It’s in the old town with the mountains all around. You can get there by regional train via Freilassing, and it pairs well with a winter walk.

Salzburg: open on New Year’s Day

Salzburg’s big Christkindlmarkt on the Domplatz and Residenzplatz is open on both Christmas holidays (11:00 to 18:00), on New Year’s Eve (stalls until at least 18:00, some food stands until 1:00 for the city’s New Year’s party) and even on 1 January. From Munich it’s just under two hours on the regional train, so it makes a great day trip.

Berlin: two markets into the new year

Berlin is the big-city winner here. The market around the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz and the Berliner Weihnachtszeit at the Rotes Rathaus, which has an ice rink, both run until 3 January 2027. The Rotes Rathaus market is closed on Christmas Eve, and berlin.de also lists it as closed on New Year’s Eve, so check that one before the 31st.

Vienna, Innsbruck and Seefeld: to 6 January

In Austria, Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, two Innsbruck markets and Seefeld up on its plateau all keep going until 6 January. The Hungerburg market sits high above Innsbruck with a view over the city, and after Christmas it closes at 18:00.

Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most elegant markets in Germany, between the concert hall and the two domed churches. Kids under 12 get in free. In Salzburg, the Mirabellplatz market is the smaller, more local sister of the cathedral market, and it’s an easy walk from the train station.

Kinderweihnacht (Children’s Christmas)Nuremberg27 Nov 2026 – 30 Dec 2026Closed 25 Dec. 26–30 Dec 11:00–20:00

These are mostly the big city markets in the west and north of Germany. Dortmund puts up what the city calls the biggest Christmas tree in the world (45 meters), and it stays lit until 30 December. Duisburg’s market lines the Königstraße shopping street. Lübeck, the home of Lübeck marzipan, is a sweet stop if you’re in the north.

In Nuremberg, the main Christkindlesmarkt ends on 24 December, but the Kinderweihnacht (Children’s Christmas) on Hans-Sachs-Platz reopens on 26 December and runs to the 30th. Right nearby, the Feuerzangenbowle village at the Fleischbrücke serves its flaming punch until 31 December (from 13:00 on New Year’s Eve). There’s more in our Nuremberg Christmas market guide.

These give you a day or two of bonus market time after Christmas Day. The Munich Airport market is covered, so it works in any weather, and it’s handy on an arrival or departure day.

What’s open on 24, 25 and 26 December?

Christmas Eve is the main family celebration here, and markets that are open that day usually close early in the afternoon. 25 and 26 December are both public holidays in Germany and Austria. A few markets open on both days (Garmisch, Schönbrunn, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Seefeld, Kitzbühel), while many others take Christmas Day off and reopen on the 26th (Berchtesgaden, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Lübeck, Nuremberg’s Kinderweihnacht). Shops are closed on both holidays, so it’s smart to stock up on snacks before the 24th.

My tips for a market trip between Christmas and New Year

  • Check the day, not just the dates. “Open until 30 December” doesn’t always mean every day: several markets close on the 24th and 25th. The table rows above list the closed days.
  • Go in the afternoon. It gets dark around 16:30, and the week between the years is a popular time for locals too. A weekday afternoon gives you room to browse.
  • Bring cash and keep your mug. Most hot drinks come with a mug deposit (Pfand) of a few euros. Return the mug for your money back, or keep it as a souvenir. 🎄
  • Use regional trains. Garmisch, Berchtesgaden and Salzburg are all reachable from Munich by regional train, and both the Bayern-Ticket and the Deutschlandticket cover them. Check times in the DB Navigator app, because holiday timetables can differ.

If you’re here earlier in December, take a look at our guides to Munich’s Christmas markets, 5 day trips from Munich and the Krampus runs in Bavaria and Tyrol. Our German Christmas markets 2026 guide has the opening dates for the big ones.
