Updated 6 November 2026. Dates and hours below were checked on the official market websites and Cologne tourism pages on 6 November 2026.
Short answer: Cologne has eight Christmas markets worth planning for in 2026. The big Cathedral market on Roncalliplatz runs 16 November to 23 December. Harbour and Stadtgarten open earliest (13 November). Heinzels in the old town opens 23 November and the Heumarkt ice rink stays open into early January. Most close on Totensonntag (Sunday 22 November).
Servus (hi)! 👋 We live in a small German village near the Austrian border, south of Rosenheim. Our December usually means smaller Bavarian markets, but Cologne is the one I send friends to when they want variety in one city. You can walk between several markets in an evening, or ride the Stadtbahn (Cologne’s tram and light rail) between the farther ones.
Rheinland Tourismus lists eight distinct Cologne markets for 2026, including a brand-new Köln-West market. The city site also tracks a few smaller neighborhood ones. Below I compare the eight, with dates, hours and who each one suits.

For the wider Germany picture, start with our German Christmas markets guide and the 2026 Christmas market calendar. Our Cologne city guide covers the cathedral, old town and how to get around the rest of the year.
1. Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom (Cathedral market)
This is the one on every postcard: red-roofed stalls under Cologne Cathedral on Roncalliplatz, with a huge natural fir (up to about 25 meters) and a light tent. Organizers call it the “Markt der Herzen” (market of hearts). It draws millions of visitors a year, so go early in the day or on a weekday evening if you can.
- Dates: Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026
- Closed: Totensonntag, Sunday 22 November
- Hours: Sun–Wed 11:00–21:00; Thu–Fri 11:00–22:00; Sat 10:00–22:00
- Stalls: more than 120
- Tram stop: Dom/Hauptbahnhof (lines 5, 16, 18)
It’s free to enter. Expect classic Glühwein (mulled wine), local sweets and crafts. The market has an ISO sustainability certification, which is unusual for a Christmas market this size.
2. Heinzels Wintermärchen (old town)
Heinzels spreads across Alter Markt and Heumarkt in the Altstadt (old town), themed around the Heinzelmännchen (the helpful house spirits from Cologne legend). Alter Markt leans toward crafts; Heumarkt has the outdoor ice rink and stays open longer.
- Alter Markt: 23 November – 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–22:00
- Heumarkt: 23 November 2026 – 10 January 2027; daily 11:00–22:00 until 30 December, then 11:00–21:00 from 31 December; closed 24 and 25 December
- Tram stop: Heumarkt (lines 1, 5, 7, 9) or Rathaus (line 5)
If you’re in Cologne between Christmas and early January, Heumarkt is one of the few big city-center options still running. Our guide to Christmas markets open after Christmas lists others across Germany.
3. Markt der Engel (Angels’ Market, Neumarkt)
White stars hang over the lanes on Neumarkt. This is one of the older continuous markets in Cologne (it restarted the modern boom in the 1970s). Expect crafts, food stalls and a program with choirs, Nikolaus and the big Hänneschen Theater figures.
- Dates: 16 November – 23 December 2026
- Closed: Totensonntag, 22 November; last day (23 December) closes at 21:00
- Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00; Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00 (Glühwein stands usually one hour longer)
- Tram stop: Neumarkt
4. Nikolausdorf (Rudolfplatz)
A village-style market in front of the medieval Hahnentorburg gate. Good with kids: there’s a chapel, a stage program from about 18:00, and Nikolaus walking the lanes in the late afternoon (around 16:30–17:30 on open days, per the organizer).
- Dates: 16 November – 23 December 2026
- Closed: Totensonntag, 22 November; 23 December closes at 21:00
- Hours: Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00; Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00 (Glühwein stands usually one hour longer)
- Tram stop: Rudolfplatz
5. Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Harbour market)
On the Rhine next to the Schokoladenmuseum (Chocolate Museum) in the Rheinauhafen. For 2026 the organizer is swapping the old pagoda tents for about 70 wooden huts and a new lighting setup. There’s a big wheel with views over the river and the cathedral skyline.
- Dates: 13 November 2026 – 3 January 2027 (longest of the main markets)
- Hours: typically Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00; Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00 (confirm on the day for holiday hours)
- Walk: about 15–20 minutes south from the old town along the Rhine, or tram toward Severinstraße / Rheinauhafen
Pair it with a Chocolate Museum visit if you’re with kids. It opens before most other markets, so it’s a solid pick for a mid-November arrival.
6. Weihnachtsmarkt im Stadtgarten
In the beer-garden grounds of the Stadtgarten restaurant in the Belgian Quarter. More than 60 exhibitors rotate weekly, with a design and handmade focus locals like. Hours start later on weekdays, which suits an after-work stop.
- Dates: 13 November – 23 December 2026
- Hours: Mon–Fri 16:00–21:30; Sat–Sun 12:00–21:30; Totensonntag (22 November) from 18:00
- Address: Venloer Straße 40
This is where I’d go if I already did the Cathedral market and wanted something calmer the same evening.
7. Weihnachtsmarkt Köln-West (new for 2026)
First year: on the old 4711 perfume-factory site (Quartier B) in Bickendorf, about 10,000 m² with indoor and outdoor areas, crafts, food and a stage. It’s west of the ring, so plan a tram ride rather than a stroll from the Dom.
- Dates: 19 November – 23 December 2026
- Hours: Mon–Fri 14:00–22:30; Sat–Sun 12:00–22:30
- Address: Venloer Straße 769, 50827 Köln
8. Nikolausmarkt Köln-Nippes
A shorter neighborhood market on Schillplatz in Nippes: local makers (ceramics, jewelry, candles, knitwear), food stalls and a carousel. Worth it if you’re staying nearby or have an evening free in mid-December.
- Dates: 7 December – 20 December 2026
- Hours: daily 15:00–21:00
Which Cologne Christmas market should you visit?
- Only have one evening: Cathedral market, then walk to Heinzels in the old town (about 10 minutes).
- With kids: Nikolausdorf, Harbour (Chocolate Museum + big wheel) and Heinzels for the ice rink.
- Prefer quieter / more local: Stadtgarten, then Nippes if you’re there in December.
- Arriving mid-November: Harbour and Stadtgarten open 13 November; Dom, Engel and Nikolausdorf on the 16th.
- Staying past Christmas: Heumarkt (Heinzels) to 10 January and Harbour to 3 January.
Munich’s markets have a different feel (see our Munich Christmas markets guide), and Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is the classic Franconian one (Nuremberg guide). Cologne’s strength is having several strong markets you can combine in a day.
How to get between the markets
The Cathedral, Heinzels, Engel and Nikolausdorf form a walkable central loop (roughly Dom → Alter Markt/Heumarkt → Neumarkt → Rudolfplatz). Harbour is a Rhine walk south. Stadtgarten sits in the Belgian Quarter northwest of the ring. Köln-West and Nippes need the Stadtbahn or a bus.
During the season a small Christmas-market shuttle train (Weihnachtsmarkt-Express / Bimmelbahn) links several of the central markets. Details change year to year; check bimmelbahnen.de closer to your trip.
For trains into Cologne, Köln Hbf sits next to the cathedral market. The Deutschlandticket covers regional trains and local transit (not ICE/IC/EC). From Munich or Berlin you’ll usually want a long-distance ticket into Köln Hbf, then walk or ride local transport between markets.
What to eat, drink and wear
Glühwein in a ceramic mug with Pfand (deposit) is the standard. Return the mug for your deposit back, or keep it. Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Bratwurst, roasted almonds and Dom-themed sweets show up on a lot of stalls. Our Christmas market food guide covers the Pfand system and what to try.
Cologne is a bit milder than Bavaria in December (about 4°C / 39°F on average), but it’s often wetter. A waterproof coat with a hood matters as much as thermals. Full outfit tips are in what to wear to German Christmas markets.
Practical tips
- Totensonntag (22 November 2026): Dom, Engel and Nikolausdorf are closed. Stadtgarten opens from 18:00. Harbour should still be running; confirm that morning.
- Crowds: Saturday evenings at the Dom market are the busiest. Weekday afternoons are easier.
- Cash: more stalls take cards each year, but coins still help for small drinks and mug deposits.
- Shops: German shops are closed on Sundays, so do any non-market shopping on Saturday.
