The Reiterle\, a rider on horseback\, comes into the Marktplatz and greets everyone waiting\, and then the big Christmas tree in the middle of the square is lit after the mayor’s welcome. If you can only pick one evening\, that’s a sweet one to aim for. The market itself is small\, with 61 booths spread between the Marktplatz\, the Grüner Markt\, the Kirchplatz by St. Jakob and the Lichthof (courtyard) of the town hall\, so you can see it all in an evening and still have time to walk the walls by day. \nHere’s a little detail I love: every evening in Advent a new Advent window opens on the second floor of the town hall. School classes and youth groups from the area make the windows themselves\, so look up when you’re on the Marktplatz. The whole old town is lit up during Advent too\, so an after-dark walk down the Herrngasse is worth it even after the stalls close. \nGood to know\n\nHours: Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 19:00\, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 20:00. Those are earlier closing times than in the big cities\, so plan dinner after the market rather than before.\nClosed: Sunday 22 November (Totensonntag\, a quiet holiday in Germany).\nLast day: 23 December. The stalls are gone by Christmas Eve\, so if you’re coming between Christmas and New Year\, you’ll see the town but not the market.\nIn English: the town publishes an English program and stall list for the market on its official site.\nNext year: the town has already announced the 2027 dates: 19 November to 23 December 2027\, closed on 21 November.\n\nGetting there\nBy train: ride to Würzburg or Ansbach\, then change to the regional train to Rothenburg via Steinach. The old town is an easy walk from Rothenburg station. By car: take the A7 (Würzburg–Ulm)\, exit 108 “Rothenburg/Tauber”\, and follow the signs to the center. The parking lots are a few minutes’ walk from the old town\, and the town lists the parking fees on its website. \nNearby markets\nRothenburg pairs nicely with Franconia’s bigger markets. The Würzburg Christmas Market is on the same train line\, and the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt works as a second stop. For a third\, add the Bamberg Christmas Market. \nRothenburg Christmas market FAQ\nWhen is the Rothenburg Christmas market in 2026?\nFrom Friday 20 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. It’s closed on Sunday 22 November. \nIs the Reiterlesmarkt open after Christmas?\nNo. The last day is 23 December. Evenings and Saturdays are the most popular times\, and it’s of course worth it. For easy browsing\, come on a weekday morning. Listen for the Advent music from the town hall balcony\, where brass groups and choirs play every day. Don’t miss the Kripperlmarkt by the Alter Peter church\, one of the biggest nativity-scene markets in Germany. In the town hall\, the Himmelswerkstatt lets kids dress up as little angels and make Christmas crafts. Stalls are closed on Sunday 22 November\, and on Christmas Eve the market closes at 14:00. \nGetting there\nAll S-Bahn lines (S1 to S8) and the U3 and U6 stop at Marienplatz\, directly under the market. From the Hauptbahnhof\, any S-Bahn heading into the center gets you there in two stops. Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Odeonsplatz also work. It isn’t open every day: it runs Thursday to Sunday through Advent\, from Friday 27 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. The three Advent Thursdays (3\, 10 and 17 December\, from 16:00) are the only regular weekday evenings\, and my guess is they’ll be the calmest time to go. On Saturdays it opens at noon\, so you can explore the old town in daylight and stay for the lights. \nGood to know\n\nOpen: Thursdays 3\, 10 and 17 December 16:00 to 21:00; Fridays 15:00 to 21:00; Saturdays 12:00 to 21:00; Sundays 12:00 to 20:00; and the last day\, Wednesday 23 December\, 15:00 to 21:00.\nClosed: Mondays and Tuesdays\, and Wednesdays apart from 23 December.\nFirst day: Friday 27 November 2026.\n\nGetting there\nThis is the one part that surprises visitors: the train station “Wasserburg (Inn)” is in the district of Reitmehring\, about 4 km west of the old town. City bus 431 connects the station with the old town (stops include Marienplatz and the bus station)\, and the town says the bus and train timetables are coordinated. In the evenings and on Sundays the bus runs hourly until after midnight\, so getting back to the train after the market is easy. The Rosenheim district has been part of the Munich transport network (MVV) since December 2023\, so MVV tickets cover the trip. \nNearby markets\nWasserburg is an easy add-on to the Rosenheim Christkindlmarkt. We spent an evening here in December 2024: Shauna and Elijah rode up in the Ferris wheel\, and Elijah had his Kinderpunsch (the alcohol-free punch for kids) in a real market mug. The stalls fill Max-Josefs-Platz and Ludwigsplatz in the old town\, with the arcaded houses all around\, and the organizer describes the look as typically “voralpenländisch” (the style of the Alpine foothills). \nIf you can\, come on opening day\, Friday 27 November. The stalls open at 13:00\, the Kindermärchenzug (a children’s fairy-tale parade) sets off from the Salingarten at 16:00\, and the official opening ceremony follows at the stage at about 16:30. \nWith kids\, Wednesday is the day. On 2\, 9\, 16 and 23 December the market holds family days: Kati’s Kasperltheater (a classic Punch-and-Judy-style puppet show) plays at 14:00 and 15:00\, a Christmas elf hands out little surprises all afternoon\, carousels and stalls offer reduced prices\, and there are free horse-drawn carriage rides from Heilig-Geist-Straße between 13:30 and 16:00\, leaving about every 20 minutes. \nAnd on Saturday 5 December at 16:00\, St. Nicholas rolls onto Max-Josefs-Platz in a carriage\, together with Krampus and his angels. The regional trains from Kufstein stop in Kiefersfelden and Oberaudorf on the way to Rosenheim\, so this is an easy evening trip from the Inn Valley too. The town calls it the biggest and best-known Christmas market in its region. There’s a children’s carousel in front of the fountain\, and singers and music groups from the Isarwinkel (the Isar valley around Tölz) play Christmas songs. On weekends there’s extra going on\, like concerts\, family carriage rides and ice sculptors. \nThree dates worth planning around in 2026: \n\nSunday 29 November: the town’s shops open from 13:00 (a “verkaufsoffener Sonntag”\, a shopping Sunday\, which is rare in Germany)\, so you can combine the market with some Christmas shopping.\nSunday 6 December: from 16:00 the Christkindl post office opens on the stage at the Winzerer monument\, so kids can bring their wish lists. Hours as published by the organizer in October 2026; check the official site before you go. \nInsider tips\nThe opening is the moment everyone waits for: on Friday 27 November at 17:30 the Christkind reads the prologue from the church balcony above the Hauptmarkt\, and the square goes quiet to listen. It’s very popular\, so come early if you want to see it. To actually browse the stalls\, my tip is a weekday morning\, right after the 10:00 opening. Look for the children’s Christmas market (Kinderweihnacht) and the Sister Cities market\, where Nuremberg’s twin towns sell their own specialties. The Sister Cities market runs until 23 December\, and the children’s market keeps going until 30 December. Before you leave\, pick up some Nürnberger Lebkuchen\, the local spiced gingerbread\, and try Drei im Weggla (three little Nuremberg sausages in a roll). \nGetting there\nFrom Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof it’s about a 15- to 20-minute walk through the old town. Or take the U1 subway one stop to Lorenzkirche\, which is less than 5 minutes from the market on foot. Buses 37\, 46 and 47 stop at Rathaus\, right by the square. Signs with the Christkindlesmarkt logo show the way. Driving into the center isn’t recommended in Advent. \nNearby markets\nNuremberg makes a great base.
