Insider tips

This is one of Berlin’s prettiest squares, with the market set between the Konzerthaus concert hall and the two domed churches. Good to know: unlike most German markets, it charges a small admission fee, €2. Entry is free on weekdays from 11:00 to 14:00 and on 24, 25 and 26 December, and children under 12 always get in free. So a weekday lunchtime visit is both the quietest and the cheapest. Food stalls take cards, but bring some cash for the craft stalls. Leave the big backpack at the hotel, because only small bags up to about A4 size are allowed. It’s one of the few markets open after Christmas, running right through New Year’s Eve with a special party (separate €9 ticket).

Getting there

Take the U6 to Stadtmitte, which is step-free with an elevator, or the U2 to Hausvogteiplatz (not step-free). Bus 200 stops at U Stadtmitte and Jerusalemer Straße, and bus 147 stops at Werderscher Markt.

Nearby markets

For a different feel, head west to the Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace, which is free to enter and lit up in front of the palace.
