Medieval and Castle Christmas Markets in Germany (2026 Dates)

Updated 31 October 2026. Dates, hours and prices checked against the organizers’ 2026 announcements.

Short answer: The best medieval Christmas markets in Germany for 2026 are Esslingen near Stuttgart (24 November to 22 December) and the medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz in Munich (20 November to 23 December). For a castle setting, go to the Burghausen Burgweihnacht inside the world’s longest castle (11 to 13 December) or the torch-lit market at Thurn und Taxis Palace in Regensburg (20 November to 23 December).

If the classic markets are cozy, the medieval ones are a little adventure. 🔥 You’ll find wooden booths instead of chalets, traders in costume, food cooked over open fire, and old crafts like blacksmithing and candle making. Kids usually love them, and you can often warm your hands at a real fire while you wait for your food.

What is a medieval Christmas market?

A Mittelalterlicher Weihnachtsmarkt (medieval Christmas market) is styled like a market from the Middle Ages. Expect:

  • Costumed traders and performers, from jugglers to musicians with bagpipes and drums.
  • Old crafts shown live, like blacksmiths, potters, candle makers and woodcarvers.
  • Fire food: Stockbrot (bread dough baked on a stick), meat grilled over open flames, and Met (honey wine), next to the usual Glühwein.
  • Fire shows after dark at some markets.

The best medieval Christmas markets in 2026

Esslingen: medieval market and Christmas market in one

The Esslingen Medieval & Christmas Market is the big one: a medieval market with costumed traders, fire shows and old crafts, right next to a classic Christmas market in the old town. It runs from 24 November to 22 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 20:30, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 21:30. On opening day, sales start at 16:00 and the official opening is at 17:00. Entry is free, and Esslingen is a short S-Bahn ride from Stuttgart, so you can pair it with the Stuttgart Christmas market and its decorated stall roofs.

Munich: the medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz

Munich’s medieval Christmas market sits on Wittelsbacherplatz, right next to Odeonsplatz. It has wooden booths, old crafts, food cooked over fire and a culture program on the Advent weekends. It runs from 20 November to 23 December, daily 11:00 to 21:00, with an opening ceremony on Friday 20 November at 18:00. It’s closed on Sunday 22 November (Totensonntag), and entry is free. See our Munich Christmas markets guide for the other markets nearby.

Castle and palace Christmas markets

Burghausen Burgweihnacht: inside the world’s longest castle

For one weekend, 11 to 13 December 2026, the Burghausen Burgweihnacht fills the main castle and the Waffenplatz with crafts, stories, a fire show and concerts in the castle chapel. Hours are Friday 15:00 to 21:00, Saturday and Sunday 13:00 to 21:00. Adults pay €5, and under-18s get in free. On the two weekends before (27 to 29 November and 4 to 6 December), the candle-lit Advent in den Grüben fills the old lanes below the castle.

Thurn und Taxis Palace, Regensburg: torches and courtyards

The Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn und Taxis Palace fills the palace courtyards and park with torches, craft workshops and food. It runs from 20 November to 23 December (closed Sunday 22 November): Monday to Thursday 15:00 to 21:00, Friday 15:00 to 22:00, Saturday 14:00 to 22:00, Sunday 14:00 to 21:00. It’s ticketed: adults pay €6.50 to €13.50 depending on the day, kids €3.50, and kids are free on Sundays. Regensburg’s free old-town market on the Neupfarrplatz is a short walk away.

Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin

In Berlin, the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace sets the stalls in front of the lit-up baroque palace. It runs from 23 November to 27 December (closed 24 December), Monday to Thursday 13:00 to 22:00 and Friday to Sunday 12:00 to 22:00, with free entry.

Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market

The Ludwigsburg Baroque Christmas Market sits between the town’s baroque churches, with lit angel figures floating above the stalls. It runs from 24 November to 22 December, and it’s another easy trip from Stuttgart.

Markets in medieval towns

Some of the most atmospheric markets aren’t “medieval-themed” at all. They’re simply held in towns that still look medieval:

  • Rothenburg ob der Tauber: the Reiterlesmarkt has 61 booths inside the walled old town, from 20 November to 23 December (closed 22 November). The Reiterle rides into the square for the official opening on Friday 27 November at 17:00. More in our Rothenburg guide.
  • Landshut: the Christkindlmarkt is below St. Martin’s church and Trausnitz Castle, from 19 November to 23 December.
  • Heidelberg: the Christmas market spreads over six squares below the castle ruins, from 23 November to 22 December.
  • Bamberg: the market on Maxplatz in the UNESCO-listed old town, plus a nativity scene trail, from 24 November to 23 December.

Tips for visiting a medieval or castle market

  • Go after dark. Fire, torches and candlelight are the whole point. In December it’s dark by about half past four.
  • Wear sturdy, warm shoes. Castle courtyards and old lanes mean cobblestones, slopes and sometimes gravel.
  • Bring cash. Small traders and craft stalls often don’t take cards.
  • Check the ticket rules. Most markets are free, but Thurn und Taxis and the Burghausen Burgweihnacht charge entry.
  • Try the fire food. Stockbrot is fun for kids, and our Christmas market food guide explains the rest of the menu.
